Project overview
Bridge Civil Engineering is delivering a coordinated package of drainage, rising main and storm storage tank works at Glenholt Sewage Pumping Station. The scheme forms part of a network improvement programme to increase stormwater resilience and operational capacity.
The embankment location presents persistent wet weather, rock-heavy ground conditions and restricted access. Despite these challenges, the team has maintained progress and quality through the early phases of construction.
Embankment preparation and investigation
Before installation, the team investigated the embankment to confirm the rock profile and formation, excavated staircase bases and cut routes for rising mains, vent pipes, washwater pipes, gravity overflow and ducting.
Drilling and fixing 25 dowels, each 600mm long, into bedrock helped establish a safe and stable working platform for service installation on the steep slope.
Service installation on concrete beds
The new services installed across the embankment include:
- Rising main pipework in ductile iron and polyethylene (PE).
- Vent pipework in ductile iron and 160mm outside-diameter PE.
- Washwater pipework.
- A gravity overflow pipe.
- Multiple duct runs for future services.
Each length was placed on a stabilised concrete bed, with concrete surrounds added to secure alignment and provide long-term protection.

Reinforced concrete works
The structures team completed reinforced concrete staircase bases, concrete surrounds to the new services, and formwork, base placement and stitching of the pumping station sump chamber. These works support safe operational access and structural integrity across the upgraded assets.
Storm storage tank installation
The storm tank works recorded in the project update include:
- Delivery and installation of the sump chamber and storm tank pipe sections.
- Exposure and coring of the existing overflow chamber to form a new 250mm connection.
- Excavation and temporary works for the sump chamber and dewatering pits.
- Base pour and chamber placement.
- Concrete surround and reinstatement.
- Installation of the first three storm tank pipe sections with clean stone and concrete support.
- Assembly and seating of vent pipework.
The update also records the safe installation of a fourth storm tank pipe, completed within programme.
Engineering and quality assurance
Ongoing level control across service runs and alignment checks for rising mains, vent pipes and storm tank sections underpin the works. Inspection and test records cover key stages, alongside concrete volume and specification checks, photographic records and as-built data capture.
These checks provide traceability and support compliance with the design standards.
Health, safety and site coordination
At the time of the project update, the team reported zero accidents. Daily pre-start briefings, controlled excavation and temporary works zones, and close coordination between Bridge and Tilbury Douglas supported safe delivery in difficult ground and weather conditions.
Client collaboration and workforce recognition
Following the successful installation of the fourth storm tank pipe, Tilbury Douglas recognised the site team with a milestone breakfast. The gesture was well received by the workforce and reflected the collaborative approach on site.
Bridge values working with clients who recognise their delivery teams. This partnership supports morale, communication and consistent progress throughout the project.
Progress summary
The update reports that the major embankment and storm tank installations were progressing safely and on programme. With the main service runs established and the storage tank system taking shape, the team was preparing for the next phases of construction in partnership with Tilbury Douglas.
